Who remembers Alex??

I received an email in mid-December of 2007 about a dog with terrible mange that was at a vet clinic in north Atlanta. I reluctantly opened the picture knowing we had no place for a sick dog to go except my house and it was almost Christmas. My heart broke as soon as I looked at him....how could I let this precious dog die because someone had not cared for him. The vet clinic couldn't keep him but he had won the hearts of they staff and they were begging someone to take him. So, I responded that we would even though he would take months of care and recovery. I drove for over an hour and couldn't believe how bad it really was when I saw him in dog. He was a mess! The smell from the mange and infection was breathe taking. But, Alex was the kindest dog I have ever met. How could some person let this happen to him? We drove home with the windows cracked (it was really cold) so the heat was on high. Poor Alex had no fur and was shaking from the effects of mange. When we arrived home Alex took his spot on the couch. I didn't argue since I wanted him to have some comfort. I was sure he just wanted to have some kind of relief.

Weeks turned into months and finally Alex had all of his fur back. He was a happy, healthy dog but he was getting very attached to us so we decided to move him to another foster home. He thrived in his new foster home and they loved him equally as much as we did. Our only problem was he needed a home he could call his own. We took him to adoptions and had him listed on Petfinder but no one wanted Alex. Let's face it, he's not a fluffy dog. We all knew what he lacks in cute he makes up for in personality(of coarse we think he's cute, too). Now, we know that the reason he didn't get adopted sooner is that he was waiting......

Finally, after almost exactly a year, this wonderful family was looking for a new companion and had seen Alex! The Foster took him over for a meeting and in pure Alex style he jumped on the couch and won their hearts! We could not be more thrilled for this wonderful little dog who had a will to live and a heart of gold. Georgia Humane and it's volunteers share many heartwarming stories.....and each and every life entrusted to our organization is special. We all wanted to share this Christmas story with you. It's why we do what we do!!
